Speaking of exciting things... I'm so stoked to announce that the DevRel Collective admins and I are launching a DevRel Salary Survey today! 📊 It's been a long time coming, but with the anonymized data we'll be collecting with this survey, we hope to put together a valuable resource for hiring managers and individual contributors alike. You can find more information about the survey below, but please set aside 5 minutes to take this survey this week, and feel free to spread the word!
Before we dig into the rest of the awesome content below, I want to send out a special thank you to our sponsors: ActiveCampaign, Split, Chainlink, and Google. The Difficulties of Building a Personal Brand
Building your brand in #devrel is different from many other positions.
Building a brand and a following typically works best when you focus on one thing.
However, when you're in Dev Rel, it's like playing a trumpet, banjo, and the piano all at the same time 😂
Who (Precisely) Makes Up Your Audience?
Advice for #DevRels : Clarify the term "developer" in your company. Sometimes there is some ambiguity that could impact in your strategy. When we say "developer," what are we meaning?
- Software Developer
- Business Developer
- Sales Developer
...
Authenticity is Key
Lack of transparency leads to lack of trust.
Smart developers can see past your "fluffy" content and know that you are withholding details. #DevRel

Aligning DevRel and Sales for Growth
While Sales and DevRel metrics don't mix well, the truth of the matter is, at the end of the day, enterprise customers are what keeps your company afloat! Sara Varni, Twilio CMO, recently answered questions about how Sales and DevRel teams can (and should) work more closely together in a Heavybit interview. She talks about how to make handoffs to Sales at the appropriate time (or as I call them, DevRel Qualified Leads), how to prove the value of your work in the upper part of the funnel as you're building developer awareness, and how things have changed at Twilio over the last 6 months due to COVID.
Principles of Developer Experience: An Introduction
Looking for a quick read about the top principles in building a good developer experience? Adam Kalsey has you covered with his new article. He walks through 6 basic principles that will help you understand the various areas you need to be aware of as you're attempting to build a better experience for your technical audience.
Getting Started in Developer Relations (eBook)
For all of you who have been waiting for a resource that tells you how to get started in Developer Relations, it's your lucky day! Sam Julien just released an ebook that covers exactly that. You better believe I'm going to be digging into this soon and passing it along to all of the DevRel-curious folks I meet!
p.s. For all of my Japanese subscribers, the DevRel Japan meetup group has released yet another Manga Guide to DevRel. Check out their full collection of resources!
DevRel Salary Survey
If you're building a career in Developer Relations, you know how difficult it is to figure out what the standard salary is for people in your similar role, geographic area, and experience level! The DevRel Collective has released a survey that will collect anonymized salary data, hopefully making this process easier for all of us.
The raw data won't be shared with anyone, but will be used to draw conclusions and trends about the median base salaries for DevRel professionals around the world. As you may imagine, this is a big task we're undertaking and we can use your help to ensure that we get the most amount of data possible! This isn't a one-time survey -- this will be an ongoing, rolling survey, so bookmark this page and come back to it anytime you change jobs, get a raise, or hear of another person who's joined the DevRel industry.
We'll be gathering the data and working with analysts to make sure we're interpreting the data correctly before we share it out, so stay tuned! We're excited to use this information on an ongoing basis to push the DevRel industry forward and further establish ourselves in the tech industry as a whole.
Here's the survey -- take 5 minutes this week to help us help you!

They literally make money because they grow trees. 🌳 Are you or someone you know looking to make money too? If so, check out the DevRel Weekly Collection to see if there's anything of interest.
