Welcome! 👋
Hey everybody! I hope you had a good week. It was a hectic one for me! Something about the end of Q3, finalizing Q4 planning, 2021 budgets, putting the finishing touches on our company conference, and interviewing folks for my growing team kept me more than a little busy! 😬
As I'm working on goals for Q4 (personal as well as professional), I'm interested in hearing what DevRel resources you're looking for. Where do you see gaps in the current landscape of DevRel and community content? I'd love to hear!
Best of luck with your own plans and goals as we head into the final quarter of this chaotic year.
Til next week,

p.s. If you haven't taken the DevRel Salary Survey yet, please do so! We're collecting data this quarter so that we can start processing it next quarter. The more information we can gather, the better chance we have at helping you (and your hiring manager) understand the proper salary ranges for DevRel professionals around the world.

Communities Cause Transformation
Especially internally - communities are almost untapped and yet they are the vehicle by which organizations will transform the way they work, their cultural agility, and their mindsets.

DevRel is an Investment
Creating a thriving Developer Community requires effort, planning, great product/API/Docs, and lots of maintenance.
It is not a side project for someone in your company, it is usually a full time job for a team.
It Can be Difficult, but it's Rewarding
To people trying to break into careers in community:
- It’s going to be hard
- It’s not as defined as other industries
- You’ll constantly have to prove yourself
- Career path is an open question
- It can be very rewarding
- The opportunity is large
- Now is the time

The Impact of COVID-19 on Online Community Programs
Curious how COVID has impacted online community programs? The Community Roundtable released the results from their survey this week, showing an almost equal split between programs that are thriving and others that are stalling out.

Community Managers: What they do and why you need one
I'll be honest - more often than not, blogposts like this one don't do a good job of accurately describing the role (and importance) of a Community Manager. But props to the team at Hivebrite for nailing the description for an individual who grows and nurtures an online community! Need a good description of what a Community Manager looks like? Check out this post.
DevRel Career Controversy
This week brought some controversy about DevRel roles, characteristics, and training on Twitter. While I don't agree with everything that was said, there were definitely some interesting conclusions drawn and perspectives to be taken into account! If you care to join in the conversation (as a passive observer or a respectful and active participant), I've listed the various threads below. Interested in having a deeper conversation? Let me know what you think!

What is community-based marketing (CBM)?
This first in a series of 3 blogposts talks about the concept of community-based marketing - an idea that we're all likely familiar with, even if we haven't heard the term before. If you have a few extra minutes this week, be sure to check out this series, which walks through the impact of COVID and how it's changed many company's perception of communities, as well as where community-based marketing fits in the traditional marketing funnel, and more.
