p.s. If you've been feeling a bit of imposter syndrome lately, don't forget this sound advice from Evan Hamilton: "those who talk most confidently about a topic aren't necessarily those are the best at it. Don't let yourself get imposter syndrome just because someone is confident."
Tidbits 🕔
Why DevRel is Capable of Creating Great Content
Four reasons developer relations can create great content for dev-focused companies:
- They already have the raw ingredients
- They understand the dev perspective
- They know how to teach developers
- They can attract attention
Personas are a necessary part of a successful DevRel strategy
Understanding your target developer persona, what are their assumptions, and needs, will allow you to build a product that meets their requirements, and create dev programs to delight them. Personas should be another pillar of your #devrel strategy
Events Create Momentum
Community is at the center of successful conferences and events. It’s the only function that contributes across the entire lifecycle - before, during, and after. And if approached with intention, events create more momentum than any other marketing activity.
Empathy makes Advocacy Effective
Dev/Tech advocacy is a mixture of skills. Along with the technical competency that you need for the product you are advocating for & a focus on communication(written, speaking), empathizing with the developer community has to be the most crucial one.
Putting yourselves in the shoes of a dev/researcher & bringing out the best of a product & at the same time getting the pain points back to R&D makes advocacy effective.

How to Increase Online Community Engagement
Looking to revitalize a quiet online community? Sam Pirok has some tips from her experience re-energizing a community she recently took over.
Weaving communities from the inside-out or from the outside-in?
When looking at the business value of Developer Relations from a funnel perspective, we often try to reach as many people as possible (from the outside-in). But what if we start from the inside -- those who are already engaged and building relationships not only with us, but with each other? Fabian Pfortmüller makes a case for building from the "inside-out" in this recent article.
On a somewhat related topic, Fabian has another article from this past week, musing about how to create in-person communities that are also capable of reaching a global audience.
How to Connect With Your Developer Audience
It shouldn't come as a surprise that the core of Developer Relations is about building relationships. But what are the key things we should focus on in order to build those relationships? Kim Maida offers three suggestions:
- Act With Integrity and Empathy
- Build Trust and Respect
- Inspire Loyalty and Confidence
