Welcome! 👋
We're solidly into the fall travel season over here in California, which means the days have been long but lovely, and full of amazing conversations! It also means I'm yawning a lot more and constantly trying to catch up on sleep 😅 but I'm grateful to be (cautiously) having face-to-face conversations once again.
I hope your week has been equally rewarding and full of great conversations! Let's jump into this content, shall we?
Best,
Mary (@mary_grace)

Tidbits 🕔
Speaking at Conferences? Here are a few tips.
Although I like using a dark theme while I'm coding by myself, you can't beat the clarity of a light background for slides and code when presenting at a conference on a projector of unknown quality.
Do most speakers prefer answering questions during or after a talk? Choices vary according to a poll Hanno Embregts ran.
Good vs. Great
Good dev rel: How can we acquire and retain the most developers?
Great dev rel: What do these developers want and how can we give them the highest chance of success?
On a related note...
A likely unpopular theory I'm chewing on: All the work community pros put into newsletters and celebrations and swag and the like are far less effective than a) having a really great product market fit and b) decreasing time to value for new members.
That feeling when...
That feeling when you see community members helping each other… You instantly forget all the challenges that had to be overcame to make it happen.
Also, "connection" is a complex word that means different things to different people. If your goal is to help people feel "connected" via your community, make sure you understand what that means to your specific community members. Noele Flowers has some thoughts.
Tangibles 🤓
Developer Program Leaders survey
I just spoke on a panel at DevRelX Summit yesterday (which I enjoyed thoroughly!) so it's perfect timing to see this survey come across my desk. If you're in a leadership position in DevRel, Developer Marketing, or Developer Community Programs, please take a few minutes to fill this out in the next few days. From budget to regional strategies to tooling, it's sure to be helpful information for all of us as we continue to push the industry forward.
Rethinking Engagement Analytics and Demonstrating Self-Evident Value
"Increase engagement" is a common goal for anyone running an online community. But what if we rethink that metric to better reflect behaviors that change as a result of engagement? This recent article from Engaged Organizations has me thinking about the patterns we see as a result of people's engagement, and I'm excited to dig into it further!
Structure3C also has some ideas on how to measure participation and impact, which might make an interesting pairing when analyzed against engagement patterns.
