What are you Trying to Achieve?
Developer Relations is hard, it takes a lot of thinking, experimenting, etc. to figure what would work for your organization, and sometimes what works could stop working and you’d have to figure out another method.
However, it is important to understand what your organization is trying to achieve with its Devrel program and work based on that.
There's No "One Size Fits All" Solution (And That's Ok)
People are different and they have different needs, and different ways they need to connect with others.
There's rarely a one size fits all approach to community building, rarely one 'correct solution' - and that's a good thing!
Where is your Community Actually Based?
If you say you're developer-focused, but you're not investing in emerging developer regions, maybe you need to revisit what "developer-focused" means. Your customers may be coming from the West, but they're hiring next-gen developers from India and Africa.

So You Want to Launch a Community?
Those of you who have been involved in Community and Developer Relations for a few years probably know by now that a launch is rarely as easy as it sounds. The amount of planning, strategy, conversations, and collaboration that go into a "simple" launch seems almost endless when you're in the middle of it all. So how do you make sure you've checked all the boxes? I have two resources for you this week that should help with that:
- So You Want to Launch a Community? by Tirza Austin
- Community Launch Day Checklist by Jeremy Ross
How Community Managers Can Succeed in First-Time Programs
This article from Mary Green is one of the most clearly articulated plans for joining a new company that I've seen in quite some time. She walks through what questions to ask, who to talk to, and how to set yourself up for success in straightforward, easy-to-understand steps. She even gives sample language to use for your introductory emails! If you've joined a new company (or plan to do so soon), be sure to bookmark this one.
